The practical difference between B1 and B2
You can function independently in many familiar work, study, and travel situations. The target is broader: You can understand complex ideas and communicate with substantial independence.
The transition is complete only when the new behavior appears across fresh material. A single familiar exercise may show learning, but not yet stable transfer.
A four-stage transition plan
- Stabilize the current level and classify recurring errors.
- Repair the primary gap with short focused practice.
- Combine vocabulary, grammar, and reading in goal-related tasks.
- Repeat a comparable sample and review accuracy, independence, and time.
Signs that B2 is becoming realistic
- Follow complex texts in familiar fields
- Interact with good fluency and limited strain
- Present and defend a viewpoint with relevant detail
What can delay the transition
- Nuance and implied meaning may be missed
- Complex grammar can reduce clarity under time pressure
- Specialized vocabulary limits precision in work or study
- Changing resources too often instead of completing a measurable practice cycle.
